We have very much enjoyed working with the folks at Life is Wealth. The operators really took ownership of the system and have worked very hard. They attended health and hygiene training in the mornings and worked to learn the system in the afternoons. The key educators seem very enthusiastic and motivated. It was great that we had time to coach them as they taught Crystal's leadership team girls in the afternoons. Certainly the practice was good for them. It was a real boost as well that Pastor Yves attended every education session, even the afternoons with the girls, and was an enthusiastic participant. Crystal was amazed that he did that.
As I said, the celebration was a bit unusual. Life is Wealth orphanage is located in a fairly tough neighborhood, and Pastor Yves sent some of his people into the neighborhood to let folks know we would be celebrating the installation and beginning of the water system operation. So at the designated time of 2 pm, there was quite a crowd in the courtyard waiting for the event to start. Pastor Yves opened with prayer and with telling the people about the water, why it was important and what to use it for. Our education group led singing of the “Use This Water” song (in creole) and then we awarded certificates for those who completed the education training and for the operators. We passed out cups of water, and there was a lot of grabbing, getting seconds, and no one waited for a “toast”. Pastor Yves is normally cheerful, in charge and very in control, but he seemed quite different during the celebration. We could only figure there were some elements from the neighborhood who were there to mock and cause trouble and
he was concerned about what they would do. Unlike most preachers, he kept it very short and did not talk on and on. When one of our guys asked, he said he just wanted to end it and have the outside folks “go away”. It was all a little strange. Once the celebration was over, Pastor Yves returned to his usual jovial self and thanked us profusely for all we had done and the clean water we had provided for the school and orphans. So with hugs all around he sent us on our way.
In spite of the weird celebration, we have high hopes that this water board has taken ownership of the system and its future success. Also that the three people selected as educators take their responsibility seriously and will actually do some good health and hygiene training in the school and in the neighborhood. Crystal is there and will be reporting to us how things are going until we can get back there to follow up.
While here in Haiti, we have been worrying over a problem at the Camp Perrin site. Two pumps have burned up in a relatively short period of time. Valdes, one of our Haitian colleagues, believed he had the solution in installing a stronger inverter and a different type pump (and I just told you more than I know). We do not know if Valdes solution will solve the problem, but just sending them another of the same type pump certainly doesn’t seem like a good idea. So we all decided it best to go ahead and give Valdes money to implement his plan. He has some time available now so he can go to Camp Perrin and implement the plan right away. With 2 pumps already burned up it is time to try something different. Chavanne, the director of the facility there, is waiting for some help!BHCCinHaitihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12203427319255300945noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6122474668625882118.post-73742189321925619962014-11-09T13:26:00.000-08:002014-11-09T13:26:03.441-08:00November 4, 2014Darenda left for Pittsburgh early this morning, her leadership duties complete. And it was probably a good thing, since she had developed a sore throat and wasn’t feeling all that great. An amazing thing happened on the way to the airport, though. She was riding along with Ancy in the Kia and noticed someone who looked familiar riding alongside on a moto (motorcycle taxi). He looked up and recognized her - I guess there aren’t all that many lady “blancs” with curly blonde hair driving through Port Au Prince traffic in big blue Kias these days. Anyhow, he hopped off the moto and hopped into the Kia - turns out it was Pastor Daniel for whom we installed a system in his Valiere orphanage last year! He rode on to the airport with her and they had a good discussion of what is going on with his system!

Betsy was feeling a little under the weather this morning, but popping some Pepto Bismol seems to doing the trick. When first I saw her, she told me that I might have to do today solo. Thank goodness it didn’t work out that way! Education is a lot easier and less stressful with two of us tag-teaming!
We got started at Life is Wealth orphanage right on schedule this morning. Our students showed up relatively on time (at least for Haiti) and the guys got right to work on finishing the system installation. So it was a good morning. Afternoon instruction consisted of us coaching our four ‘education leaders’ as they repeated the morning’s lessons for Crystal’s group of leadership girls. Everyone got really competitive when we did the exercise where we have them lotion their hands with a fluorescent lotion and then try to get it all washed off so nothing showed under our little black light flashlights. You’ve never seen a group of people wash their hands so thoroughly or for so long!
The only other hiccup in the otherwise pretty perfect day occurred when we got back to Pacot Breeze where we’re staying. When we arrived we were told that our Haitian colleagues did not have a room reservation for the night and would have to leave. Turns out, the reservation agent made the reservation for Sunday to Tuesday, not Monday to Wednesday. So even though the guys didn’t occupy a room on Sunday, we were being charged for it. We were pretty upset but the poor girl at the desk was just doing her job by the book. As it turns out, their room was still available, so they are staying. We just had to figure out if Pacot Breeze will make us pay for an extra night or not. Finally the manager waded into the whole thing and decided we didn’t need to pay for our Haitian colleagues for tonight after all. All is well that ends well!

We had a nice dinner on the terrace this evening with good conversation all around in the excellent company of our Haitian colleagues. Karl leaves tomorrow morning early so he won’t be here to enjoy the dedication. He’ll be missed.BHCCinHaitihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12203427319255300945noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6122474668625882118.post-28303011032165517272014-11-08T18:27:00.000-08:002014-11-08T18:27:05.533-08:00November 3, 2014 - Port Au PrinceWe're back in the States now but I wanted to report on our latest water purification system installation effort in Haiti. The installation is at Life is Wealth orphanage run by Pastor Yves in the Carrefour Feuille area of Port Au Prince. The orphanage has about 60 children, mostly girls, but Pastor Yves also has a church and a 600 student school as part of the complex. I tried to blog when we were there, but had the wrong login info for Blogger
and got locked out trying to get in. So the blog entries were written in
real time, just getting posted on a delayed basis! Here goes . . .

Well, it's been a crazy day with multiple "Welcome to Haiti" moments!

Darenda and Betsy came to Haiti a few days early in order to enjoy some of the finer aspects of Haiti with Crystal Funk who lives here a good part of the year and with whom we’ve worked before. Thursday thru Friday were lovely, but they spent Sunday nursing and cleaning up after Crystal’s sick puppies. One of the pups ended up at the vet where Crystal is paying $100/day for a week or so for parvovirus treatment - which the pup may or may not recover from.

The guys, Steve, Alan and Karl, were to come in to PAP Sunday about 2:30 pm. For reasons too complicated to explain, I was on different flights arriving at 1 pm. The plan was for me to wait for the guys in the baggage claim area. So 2:30 came and no guys showed up. 3:00 came and still no guys. 3:30 the same. There was no flight info in the baggage claim area so I had no idea what had happened to them. I had cellular on my phone turned off to avoid big out-of-country charges so I couldn’t get email. Finally I texted Crystal (thank goodness texts worked!) and she immediately called me to tell me the guys flight out of Pittsburgh was cancelled so they were flying to Miami and spending the night there at the airline’s expense. They wouldn’t be coming in until Monday morning. So I left baggage claim and immediately met up with the Haitians who had been waiting patiently in the parking lot to drive me to where we’re staying. The sent someone in to look for me, but somehow I managed to escape notice at at a time when I was trying to look as obvious as possible! Welcome to Hait!

This morning Crystal and Redgie were to pick us up and take us to Life is Wealth Orphanage. First they had a flat tire. Then they got caught up in Port Au Prince gridlock traffic. While we were waiting for them, we figured out that our Haitian driver and coordinator, Ancy, had all the suitcases in the KIA including the one with the education materials that we had to have for teaching and he was on the way to the airport to pick the guys up. We were supposed to start teaching at Life is Wealth at 9 am and the guys flight wasn't even arriving until then! So when we did get to the orphanage, we wouldn't have any of our teaching materials! Welcome to Haiti!

We got to the orphanage and Darenda sat with the water board to sign the covenant that states our responsibilities as the initiating partner and the Haitian operating partners.
Then we and our students waited patiently for the guys to arrive so we could get started. They finally got to the orphanage about 11 am along with our education materials (thank goodness!) and we plunged right in (just 2 hours late) - as did the guys. At that point, the training was going ok, but we kept getting reports that the guys couldn't find things they needed for the installation. Welcome to Haiti! The one I specifically heard about was the flow meter. Valdes suggested they could build the system without and he could come back later and put one in. Apparently they found all other missing items. Karl said he and Valdes (Haitian colleague) had the solar part almost done by the end of the day. Our guys are FAST!
Teaching went well. We had a class of 7 adults from 11 am to 1 pm. Then 4 of them (including Pastor Yves, head and director of the church, school and orphanage) came back at 2 pm along with about 15 of the older girls, Crystal’s leadership group. So in the afternoon we repeated the morning's lesson for the girls with the Haitians teaching most of the activities. We were really pleased with what a great job they did with the teaching. The girls were pretty shy at first, but they relaxed as we got into it.
In Les Cayes, Rick, Chris and I attended worship at the Baptiste Church where we were treated as honored guests and invited to address the congregation. Both celebrations were joyous occasions with plenty of community participation. Rick spoke at the site in Les Cayes, Darenda spoke for Bower Hill at the orphanage. Most of our health/hygiene class participants as well as operator trainees showed up to receive their certificates at both sites. Then folks turned the attention to receiving their water. It was broiling hot, so toasting the water was highly appreciated - and many requested seconds!

I only have some pictures of the Les Cayes celebration - we spilt up with some team members attending one celebration and some attending the other since both were held at 9:30 am. I will post more photos later when I have access to those taken by other team members.
All the operators trained at both sites.

Betsy and I were pleased that our new young friend, Jackson Coudo, will be one of the operators for Frantzou's system. Jackson is studying agro-forestry at the American University of the Carribean. He was not originally involved at all, but became so because we held our classses at his aunt's house. His English is pretty good and he wanted to be more involved in what we're doing so we suggested he talk to Frantzou. He did, and now he'll be an operator!

When all the work for the week was done, we took the opportunity for some recreation with our Haitian teammates - we all drove to Port Salud where there's a beautiful beach to hunt for shells, enjoy the scenery, wade in the warm water and watch a beautiful sunset. We were serenaded by a steel drum band while we enjoyed a delicious dinner on the beach. What a lovely end to a rather frenetic week!

Today we'll celebrate the installation of water purification systems at both sites. Praise God! He is good, all the time!

Photos are more difficult to post. I'll try to get caught up with them as I am able.BHCCinHaitihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12203427319255300945noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6122474668625882118.post-67542555679594547412013-11-22T19:29:00.002-08:002013-11-22T19:29:58.387-08:00Another beautiful day in Haiti!<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

OK. So we found out that Pere Daniel’s
building isn’t ready. So what do our guys do? They all throw themselves into
doing the install at Frantzou’s building while Rick and Darenda went to Pere
Daniel’s to see if it was as behind schedule as we’d heard. The result was that
Frantzou’s system was pretty much complete by the end of the day – what a crack
team we have!!!

Rick and Darenda found that, indeed, the building at Pere
Daniel’s orphanage was not ready. Pere Daniel gets money in dribbles and
drabbles, and he had spent some of the money for health emergencies and food
for the kids. Can’t really argue with those priorities, but the fact remains
that we are out of here on Monday. Pere Daniel assured us the building would be
ready to go by Friday.

Today there have been further developments. Frantzou’s
system is fed by a cistern filled by water from an intermittent city source.
When they were ready for a test run the cistern hadn’t been filled because the
city water source was not operating. So our crack team headed for Pere
Daniel’s. The building is looking closer to being ready so they did all the
work they could installing the system on the board that was not yet mounted in
the building plus a lot of the wiring and it shouldn’t take long to finish up.
What a team!

In the meantime, Betsy and I have been doing health/hygiene
education at both sites. On Wednesday we arrived at about 11:30 am and began
teaching the group at Frantzou’s site at 2:30 pm. We were amazed to find 24
people waiting to learn what we had to teach. In spite of the language barrier,
the group was really engaged and participating. We were a little overwhelmed by
the numbers and having to work at a private house in a small space, but it all
worked out. Our first session today was 9 am at Pere Daniel’s with a group of 8
guys and 1 woman. They were also a thoroughly engaged group. Then in the
afternoon we did another session at Frantzou’s with the big group – which grew
by 4 or 5more people who showed up for the first time!

So in spite of the challenges, we think we are on schedule
to finish both systems in time! God is good, all the time!

Reflecting on the challenges of the trip, Meg Kelly’s
observation sent us all into gales of giggles. Her comment: “Bower Hill ain’t
for sissies!” Is this fodder for a new Communications Committee ad?

Next post will (I hope) be pictures.

It's great to have friends to stay with in Haiti! And some of us even got some sleep in spite of barking dogs, crowing roosters, sporadic heavy truck traffic and arguing neighbors. Crystal sent us off in the morning with a wonderfully yummy breakfast in our tummies. Thanks Crystal!

It's theoretically a 4 hour drive to Les Cayes from Crystal's which we made in 5 - due to having to make 3 stops for tire repairs on one of the Kias. At least we made it! We were met with good news and bad news. The good was our friend Frantzou's beautiful new water building and 24 eager students for our health/hygiene class. The bad news was that the secon building at the orphanage is not completed and not ready for the installation.

Note to Crystal - the water at your orphanage tested bad. I will attempt to post a picture.

Breakfast is served here so more on the unfolding saga of water system challenges laterBHCCinHaitihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12203427319255300945noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6122474668625882118.post-37522541601343989752013-11-21T03:53:00.000-08:002013-11-21T03:53:02.010-08:00Brief UpdateI just want to get in a brief post to let you know we are all doing OK. I really did to post yesterday, but between a slow computer and bad Internet connection it didn't happen - in spite of a couple of hours of sustained effort. And then the computer ate (without any chance of recovery) the day's entry I had typed arrrrrrgh :(. Just forget photos! I'll try to get you a fuller report soon. As usual, life has been exciting here in Haiti!BHCCinHaitihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12203427319255300945noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6122474668625882118.post-59362170514825724012013-11-19T19:13:00.001-08:002013-11-19T19:13:59.877-08:00Day 1 - arrival and challenges

We’ve arrived in Haiti and the challenges are still here! The first was getting out of the airport with our 24 suitcases. First I was taking photos of the team with all the bags and got accosted by a customs agent for photographing in the airport, and especially for him being in one of the pics – inadvertently but he didn’t care about that. Then they decided to inspect the contents of every suitcase. I think they didn’t believe that we were bringing the stuff in for charitable purposes and not to sell it. I’m sure they had in mind taxing it – but thank goodness Rick managed to convince them our intentions were entirely benevolent. However, it was a pretty intense several minutes.

We were REALLY happy to get out to the parking lot and meet up with our drivers Lucson and Ronald and the 2 Kias so we could get out of there! Then we got into the traffic. It was actually worse one previous trip, but it was exciting enough – especially for our first-timers, Meg and Steve. We ran into it on the narrow side streets that were barely wide enough for the Kias, let alone the two lanes of traffic with huge trucks in the oncoming lane with cars parked along the sides of the streets and pedestrians and motorcycles weaving in and out of the traffic from every direction. All in the dark as only Port au Prince can be dark in the middle of such mayhem. The big trucks squeezed by us with barely the width of a coat of paint in between us and them. And the motorcycles and pedestrians passed between the cars and trucks via spaces you’d swear were too tight for them to fit through.

All this was on the way to an orphanage, Life is Wealth, that Crystal Funk (Hearts United With Haiti) wanted us to evaluate as a possible site for a future water purification system. We arrived in the dark to a crowd of children, all but 4 of them girls from toddlers to teens, and all clamoring for attention and to have their pictures taken. Their water source was a cistern filled with collected rainwater or by a commercial water truck when there’s not enough rain. That water is used for drinking, cooking, bathing and washing clothes. After a search of multiple bags in the dark a whirly bag was produced and the water set up for testing. We should know within 2 days if the water is contaminated. What a visit, though! All those beautiful children and so much need.

The rest of the evening was much less eventful – dinner and on to Crystal’s for devotions and good company. In the dark. Crystal’s neighborhood hasn’t had electricity for a week since the transformer blew. And no running water since the water truck hasn’t come to fill the tank for 3 weeks. Welcome to Haiti!

It's late and my 3 am rising is catching up with me. Photos tomorrow.

Our traveling team this trip includes Betsy and Alan Hohlfelder, Chris Robbins, Steve Boisverts, Meg Kelly (from Westminster Presbyterian Church), Darenda Lease, and Rick and Pat Jacobs. We'll be installing one at an orphanage in Les Cayes working with Divine Ministries in Hope for Children and another at the Baptiste Church of nearby Charpentier. As usual, we'll be working under a very tight schedule, installing two systems between Wednesday and Saturday with celebrations on Sunday then returning to Port Au Prince and home on Monday!

At the orphanage we'll be working with Pastor Jean Daniel who we met during earlier trips to Haiti. At Charpentier our in-country partner is our friend Frantzou Avril with whom we've worked on earlier trips and who visited us in Pittsburgh late last year. We had a packing "party" last Saturday - 20 suitcases full of system pieces and tools and 4 suitcases of personal stuff for the 8 members of the team.
We think the only reason we got here, a 5 hour delay notwithstanding, was that the Haitian Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe, was on the plane with us. So we made our connection from Miami to Pittsburgh, arriving at 12:30 am this morning, only an hour and a half late. More importantly, we did not have to stand in the quarter mile long line of people waiting in the Miami airport for American Airline issued hotel and food vouchers!

Thanks to Steve, Glenn, and Dan who picked us and our luggage up at the airport at such a wee hour in the morning!

For your pleasure, I'm adding a few more photos from our celebration day on Sunday.
I wrote a blog entry. Once everyone was back together, we all climbed into the Kia for the return trip to Port au Prince. The drive was uneventful, if hot, except that none of us had saved anything to eat and there was no place to stop for lunch. We were pretty ravenous by the time we got to Eucalyptus House.

We started the evening visiting with another Episcopalian group from DC who have an eduction ministry near where we have been working. But we were then stunned to hear of the bombings in Boston. What a sad day - we all pray for those injured and the families of the dead.

As we leave this place, we know we must return. The water from at least one of the sites we surveyed tested positive for contamination.
The kids in Camp Perrin seem much more reserved than those in Chaveneau and don't smile as readily. A few showed up on the steps of the buildings in Camp Perrin, and then a few more, and more . . . just quietly sitting and watching. We tried to warm us the crowd with crackers and a few pieces of candy. Then to engage them more, we began singing and doing the "Hokey Pokey". They really got into that, not the singing part, but the dancing. We must have looked a sight - six "blanque" adults singing and wiggling their bodies in front of a row of Haitian kids.
It was almost time for the celebration when someone remembered that we hadn't had any fresh coconut yet. Immediately an elderly man was summoned (the same fellow who got coconuts for us last February) and he shimmied up the courtyard coconut tree and began throwing down ripe coconuts. Once they detmined that we had enough coconuts he shimmied back down and began cutting the coconuts open and handing them out for a refreshing FRESH coconut water drink.
When it was all over, we said tearful goodbyes, hugged everyone within range, and piled into the back of Chavannes' pickup truck for the trip back down the mountain and back to the Kia. Chavannes then took us all out for a treat. He led us down into into a canyon at the bottom of which was a dramatic waterfall, De Saut-Mathurine. It really was beautiful except that apparently a power company was doing some major work upstream and the water was all muddy brown. Then he treated us all to cold Prestiges at an outdoor lounge near the falls.
Last night everyone was happy but tired when all was done for the day. We were all either in bed or getting ready for bed when we were summoned to the dining room - even the presene of the ones already asleep was demanded. So we all gathered at 10:30 pm to find that ANOTHER delicious hot meal had been prepared for us. Apparently it is a custom on Saturday night, because people stay us late and sleep in on Sunday. The custom is called Fritay (pronounced free-tie). We really enjoyed the goat and the fellowship, then brushed our teeth again and went back to bed!

Just to let you know, we will be leaving Camp Perrin this afternoon and will spend the night in Torbeck. I will not have internet access in Torbeck. We will spend the morning on Monday scouting other potential sites in the Torbeck area. From there we will go on to Port au Prince where we will spend our last night at Eucalyptus House and fly to Pittsburgh on Tuesday. I will post pictures of the celebration whenever I have internet access again.

Random thoughts. Water for hand washing is not always available, so antibacterial liquid is ubiquitous. Akeisha has gotten us started calling it "Cootie Lotion".
"I've got to get goat out from between my teeth" is not something you hear very often in Pittsburgh.
A cold prestige at the end of the day is a wonderful thing. And a cold "spit" bath from a basin or a cold shower doesn't feel nearly so shocking when it's 90+ degrees most of the day.
To get here, we had to leave our own transportation at the bottom of the mountain in Camp Perrin. Then Chavannes, the Director of the MP3K project, drove us up the mountain to the village in his "turbo" Toyota pickup truck. Not just any vehicle can make the drive up that road and apparently our big Kia is not one of them. "Blanques" do not come here on vacation or for much of any other reason. Most of the locals have no transportation but their feet other than the occasional motorcycle or donkey.

The result is that we have been the most exciting entertainment in the village all week. We have had lots of people hanging around just watching to see what in the heck we are doing.
The four operators' training will be completed by tomorrow noon. Darenda, Akeisha, Chavannes, and Franthz completed the covenant agrement. Potential new sites have been scouted. It doesn't get more fresh, local, labor intensive than thisIt was an early start this morning and we downed all the coffee they had made for us before we even sat down to breakfast. So Darenda asked for more. Later she heard the kitchen staff laughing about her and her coffee. The fresh coffee turned up at lunch. You must know the coffee is really a big deal here - it is wonderful! Strong, flavorful and very mellow - and a little sweet, even without added sugar. Karl discovered the secret. Around behind the dining hall and kitchen is a little hut with a fire pit and a large wooden mortar and pestle. Karl heard pounding out there and went out to investigate. He found one of the women who works in the kitchen grinding coffee beans that had just been picked and freshly roasted over the fire. Doesn't get any fresher than that!

Speaking of fresh, we awoke this morning to the squealing of a goat (at the time we didn't know that's what was making all the noise). It was in the process of being killed for our dinner and none too happy about it. Just now I went around back thinking I might catch someone grinding coffee but instead I found one of the women working on the goat meat and a dead rooster ready to be plucked. These people, who don't necessarily eat every day, are going to incredible effort to feed us three cooked meals a day. It is truly humbling. It doesn't get any more local - or labor intensive - than that.
Tim worked with Valdez to build the purification system. Rick and Karl worked on the wiring. Darenda and Brian visited some other sites. Akeisha helpd me teach the first part of the health and hygiene class with our friend Frantzou translating. In spite of getting a late start, much was accomplished. Tim and Valdez pretty much finished building the system. They will be ready to do operator training by tomorrow afternoon. Rick and Karl made great progress with the wiring for the solar power system and should be finished tomorrow.
Our health and hygiene class went well. Akeisha and I started the class with having the class act out the story of Moses, Pharoah and the Red Sea. We had GREAT Moses and Pharoah characters! They really got into it. Afterwards, we had super community help with making paper chains for Sunday's celebration and putting Living Waters labels on all the bottles.
At the end of the work day, we got a round of frisbee going among the crowd that had gathered to observe what the " blanques" (whites) were up to. Interesting that some of the guys had never encountered a frisbee before - but that didn't stop them from really getting into the game.
The most wonderful thing happened at the end of the day. Many of you may remember the little girl we photographed getting water in Camp Perrin last February. We have all been hoping to see her to know that she is still ok. After dinner, we decided to take a walk up to the church at the top of the hill. When we got to the church, it was getting quite dark and Akeisha disappeared around the side of the church. Darenda went after her to get her to come back so we could get back "home" before it got completely dark (the road/path up there is really uneven, rocky and rutted). Darenda disappeared and didn't return. Then Rick followed. And Tim, and then our Haitian co-workers. Brian and Karl and I were left standing in front of the church alone in the gathering dark having "Blair Witch" type thoughts. Finally I said I was going to see what was going on and Karl and Brian followed. On the far side of the church we found our group talking to 3 adult Haitians and a child. And the child was a little girl wearing a shirt that said "I Do All My Own Stunts" - the girl in the photo from last February! The shirt is how Akeisha, who had only seen her in a photograph, recognized her. That child must wonder about the bear hugs she got from this crowd of "blanques".
It's Thursday, the 11th at 7 pm and we're finally in Camp Perrin! We spent last night at Roody's Baptist Compound in Leogane. Ashley, from Solar Under the Sun, had recommended the place and suggested we think "summer camp" - an accurate assessment of Roody's somewhat ramshackle but welcoming compound! We slept in two tin buildings, the ladies in one room and guys in the other. Surprisingly there was air-conditioning, at least when there was electricity. At any rate, after our early rise and all-day travel, we all slept quite well. Except for the explosion of mangos that carpet bombed the tin roof off and on all night.
That was yesterday. We finally got started for Camp Perrin at 8 am this morning and were at Les Cayes by 11:30 and ready to head from there to Camp Perrin when Lucson got a phone call from Camp Perrin telling us we couldn't come today. Okaaaaaaay . . . So after a quick conference by the side of the road, we decided to go to Torbeck and Chaveneau to check things out there instead. We had intended to do that on Monday, but we are nothing if not flexible. And we called our friend Madame Franchette in Les Cayes to make sleeping and dinner arrangements there.

On to Torbeck and Chaveneau, where we found the systems being very well run, although not selling/giving away quite as much water as we'd hoped. It was wonderful to return to both Torbeck and Chaveneau and renew friendships from last year.
While we were doing all that running around, we got another call from Camp Perrin that we should meet Chavannes at 5 pm today in Torbeck and he would ferry us and the equipment across the river and up the mountain to the village. About 5 pm we did meet Chavannes and left the Kia in the town of Camp Perrin and Chavannes drove us on to our destination. Camp Perrin is both a town and something like a county and we were heading for a little mountain village in the "district" of Camp Perrin. We arrived in the village to a joyous crowd welcoming us with hugs and Creole voices and enthusiasm. We were overwhelmed! They took our backpacks and escorted us to the dining room on the compound where a sumptuous dinner awaited. Yumm!
We were expecting cots to sleep on - but these folks went overboard! They completely decorated 3 rooms including real beds with lovely bedspreads and beautful Haitian carved headboards and footboards. The women were soooo excited to show us the rooms they had prepared for us!

They built a new building to house the water system. The construction is complete, but the walls are not finished and the floor is in the process of being tiled. The water system room takes up one corner of the building, the rest of which will offer a market with soap, deoderant, and other sundries. Tomorrow we will just work around the construction workers finishing up! Okaaaaaaay! We're nothing if not flexible.
